Last year, Kalamazoo Communities In Schools placed ten Summer Promise VISTA Fellows with first grade students in summer school.  These Fellows were current or recently graduated college students.  Many of them were education or child development majors.  They worked with the students and the teacher to improve reading and writing skills, both in small groups and one-on-one. 

KCIS also continued to connect students to various resources.  We assisted the First Day Shoe Fund in distributing new shoes, continued to distribute weekend food packs with our partner, Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, and provided books and the opportunity to read with an adult through a Bagels and Books program.
