KCIS Chase Publishing Centers Need Volunteers

The Publishing Center is an exciting and unique program.  It gives community volunteers the chance to connect one-on-one with a wide range of students.  Students come to the Publishing Center with a first draft of a story, poem, or essay.  With the volunteer, they find support and encouragement as they learn the process of editing their writing and creating a more polished second draft.  The skills they learn will help them throughout their lives, from taking tests to filling out college applications.

Volunteer Editors hear students read their stories, they gain insight into the lives and dreams of students, while helping to guide them towards improving their writing skills. Editors are needed both during the day and during after-school hours. 

Volunteer Typists pick up the edited stories from each school once a week, then work from Typists must be able to stop by the school during school hours once a week to pick up stories, but otherwise can set their own schedule. 

Volunteers are needed immediately at elementary, middle, and high schools.  The program at the middle and high school level is a unique 6-week process starting in mid-November that will help the students type their own stories, culminating in a reading or presentation.  If you're only available for a limited period of time and still want to get involved, this could be a great option! 

A Publishing Center Training for interested volunteers will be held on Friday, October 23, 9:00-10:00 am.  It will take place at the KCIS office, located at 125 W. Exchange Place.
