Congratulations to Summer "All Stars!"
This summer, 50 students from Spring Valley Center for Exploration and Edison Environmental Science Academy met at Spring Valley for seven weeks during June, July and August as part of the Integrated Student Services Summer program, named the “All Stars” by the students. The program was run by Deb Yarbrough, KCIS Site Coordinator at Edison, Martha Serio, KCIS Site Coordinator at Spring Valley, with the assistance of a talented group of Americorps VISTAs, who brought expertise in a wide variety of areas to the program. Laura Goforth, KPS Master Teacher, assisted with curriculum development for the program.
The program had two goals. The first goal was to maintain the continuity of support interventions that contribute to students becoming proficient in reading, writing, math, attendance or behavior. The second goal was to provide an experience-rich summer which enriches learning and skill acquisition---cognitive, social, emotional and physical---diminishing the consequences of the summer “slide”.
The students experienced daily fun and engaging learning experiences. Math, reading/language, writing and social-emotional skills were incorporated into all activities. Specific learning goals drove program activities rather than activities driving learning. At the end of the program, every “All Star” had made incredible progress, academically and in many other areas. Many students improved their math and reading skills by multiple grade levels. All learned two new languages, and performed in Japanese for families and friends at the end of the program.
A huge congratulations to all who participated!!
