Want to make a difference within our schools? Or perhaps you know someone who might just be the perfect candidate for AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America)?
Full time VISTA positions available. This one-year term of service provides for health care benefits and a living stipend of $831 per month. A $4,725.00 educational award (or, instead, a post-service stipend of $1,200.00 accrued at the rate of $100.00 per month) is also offered for completing a year of service. Candidates must have strong organizational and communication skills. Computer knowledge required. Experience with event planning, volunteer recruitment and training helpful. Fluency in Spanish a plus. VISTAs can take one class at a time but may not work part-time at another job. A full year commitment is required.
The role of VISTA is to develop and mobilize resources that create long-term sustainable benefits at a community level. In the case of KCIS, a VISTA assists with building a school’s capacity to respond to student and family needs. VISTA members do not perform direct service. They work “behind the scenes”, collaborating with community partners to create and expand school-based programs and services that help meet the needs of students. They serve as an extension of the KCIS Site Coordinator to support a deeper and fuller level of service within a school building. VISTAS will be matched with a school that can best utilize their interests and skills.
A sample of VISTA projects have included:
Distributing weekly food backpacks
Pulling together health/hygiene kits for students
Establishing infrastructure to support lunchtime activities for students
Recruiting volunteers for specific projects
Supporting tutoring/mentoring relationships
Assisting with supporting the school’s attendance program
Organizing special events: Bagels & Books, Cup of Coffees, Family Night
